On 13 and 14 September 2010 the EWI Department of the Flemish government, in collaboration with Directorate General for Research, Directorate E – Biotechnology, Agriculture and Food of the European Commission, is organising a high-level international conference on the theme of bio-economy. But what exactly is bio-economy? And why is it so important that the European Commission sees it as a spearhead of the EU2020 strategy?

We have the pleasure of inviting you to the press conference organised during the KBBE towards 2020 conference at the Square Meeting Centre on 14 September 2010. The press conference will be opened by Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science and joined by high-level keynote speakers.

The goal of the exhibition is to make the bio-based economy more tangible and visible and to raise awareness of the societal benefits that a shift towards a bio-based economy can provide. Twenty-one exhibition stands from large companies, SME's and research institutions, from nine different European countries guide the visitor through a fascinating perspective of what a bio-based economy has to offer.

On Monday 13 September, a site visit to the Life Sciences Cluster in Ghent and to Biorefinery complex in het harbour of Ghent is organised as well. Journalists who are interested to join the site visit can indicate their interest via the confirmation of attendance.

On Monday evening 13 September a conference dinner will be organised with high-level speakers Kris Peeters, Minister-President of the Flemish Government; Janez Potočnik, Commissioner for Environment, EC; Stephan Tanda, Managing Board, DSM.
