Q: For ERC Grant schemes: Starting Grant: The National Research Council in XYZ has a type of funding similar to the Starting Grant aiming at young and promising scientists at the stage of establishing or consolidating scientific independence. Will it be possible for PIs who have this kind of funding to apply for ERC Starting Grant if the objectives of the proposed ERC project are clearly different?
A: The PI can apply. However, please note that the main strategic aim of the ERC Starting Grant funding scheme is to provide to the most promising starting researchers in Europe the financial means to establish research independence or consolidate their role as independent research leaders. The ERC review panels will consequently review the PI's current support and assess whether the ERC Starting Grant will substantially assist the transition to independence. At the same time the PI's capacity to manage additional work and funding will need to be considered
