The AFRICA BUILD Project is a Coordination Action aiming to improve health research and education in Africa through Information and Communication Technologies. With this purpose, different methods will be carried out: knowledge transfer, e-learning or know-how, among others, to promote the creation of virtual communities to strengthen educational and research centers in Africa.
In the first stages of the Project, support and training will be provided by the European partners of the project. In later stages collaboration among African partners is expected to improve the quality of their health research and education centers. Successful actions will be extended to other centers to create sustainable learning and research opportunities.
In the first year of the Project different tasks have been already undertaken:
There are critical factors for physicians and researchers that difficult their daily job: limited funding, lack of access to training or research resources, difficult access to technological or software resources to organize clinical information, low transfer of knowledge from other regions, and others.
The situation is similar in educational and research institutions. Lack of Internet connections, lack of funding or software and hardware resources, lack of qualified teaching and research staff are just some of the reasons that affect the development of these centers.
The AFRICA BUILD Project addresses these and other problems for supporting capacity building of health, academic and research centers in Africa.
The main objective of the project is to improve the quality of education and research in African institutions through new technologies. This objective will be achieved through six sub-objectives:
The main result we expect is a sustainable development of capacity for health research and education in Africa. These will be achieved through the ABP, the implication of the final users, the participation of the African partners in research and educational networks and the development of a wide catalogue of courses covering health care, research and technologies, available for African professionals. These activities will be carried out by means of collaborative actions, including the use of social networks and incorporating volunteers.
The potential application of AFRICA BUILD is the creation of partnerships between African institutions to enhance the quality of their research and education, transforming them into major African centers of excellence. The project aims to transfer to the four African institutions the knowledge acquired at the European level, so that these institutions will be the first seed of a network of education and health research in Africa. Finally, these efforts aim to create sustainable South-South cooperation and stimulated specific academic programs and the participation of other stakeholders such as governments, foundations, industry, pharma companies and others.
