Graphic element Strategy to Control SPREAD of HIV Drug Resistance
Keywords: HIV; drug-resistance; surveillance; transmission; Europe; prevention

Summary:

Human immunodeficiency viruses, resistant to one or more HIV drugs, are spreading throughout the world. If further spread will not be controlled, a future situation may occur in which no effective drugs will be available for newly infected patients. Within the SPREAD-project, clinicians, virologists and epidemiologists from 16 European countries will develop a strategy to control transmission of resistant HIV. Viruses from thousands of newly diagnosed individuals will be collected and characterised on mutational and phenotypic level by a network of quality controlled national reference laboratories.

Problem:

Approximately one-fifth of all new HIV- infections is expected to be caused by drug resistant viruses. However, no systematic information on transmission of HIV drug resistant viruses is collected throughout Europe.

Aim:

Development and implementation of a European surveillance programme for the collection of comparable and reliable data on transmission of HIV drug resistant viruses in different countries.

Expected results:

The determination of the overall incidence and patterns of transmission of drug resistant HIV over time per country.
The analysis of the relationship between the incidence of transmission and the nature of antiretroviral consumption and guidelines.
The development of a European database of circulating HIV-drug resistant strains accessible through an internet website.

Potential applications:

The information gathered by the SPREAD project will be useful for PEP guidelines, treatment recommendations for naïve patients, prevention programmes and development of new drugs.
