Graphic element European Cohort Coordinating Network on HIV Drug Resistance
Keywords: HIV; drug-resistance; surveillance; transmission; Europe; prevention

Summary:

Human immunodeficiency viruses, which are resistant to one or more HIV drugs, are spreading throughout the world. EuropeHIVResistance will create a pan-European cohort (including Central and Eastern European countries), which will be maintained by a network of virological reference centres in 32 European countries, to study the appearance, spread and clinical consequences of HIV resistance under joint standards, and linked to a common self-sustainable database. The increased coordination made possible by EuropeHIVResistance will make a major contribution towards decreasing the fragmentation of HIV resistance research and surveillance in Europe. It will increase the level of virological expertise and skills in HIV resistance, generating new coordinated data and knowledge on transmission, prevalence and factors facilitating the emergence and spread of drug resistant HIV in Europe. It will also improve the exchange of good practices between the HIV/AIDS cohorts in Europe.

Background:

Approximately 10-20% of all new HIV infections are estimated to be caused by drug resistant viruses. There is a need for systematic information and exchange of knowledge and technologies on transmission of HIV drug resistant viruses throughout Western, Central and Eastern Europe.

Aim:

The aim is to create a pan-European cohort, which will include the SPREAD HIV drug resistance surveillance programme (QLK2-CT-2001-01344), maintained by a network of virological reference centres in 32 European countries. Through the establishment of a twinning structure between countries, an easy accessible platform will be created for the exchange of knowledge and technology throughout Europe.

In addition, active collaboration will be sought with the other European HIV/Aids cohorts.

Expected results:

The main result of this coordinated action will be the creation and maintenance of a pan-European cohort maintained by a network of virological reference centres in 32 European countries. A greater amount of knowledge and technological information will be available via the twinning structure.

Potential applications:

EuropeHIVResistance will lead to new coordinated data and knowledge on transmission, prevalence and factors facilitating the emergence and spread of drug resistant HIV in Europe. This will provide the pharmaceutical industry, scientific community and public health authorities with valuable new input for the development of new drugs, new treatment recommendations, intervention programmes and prophylactic guidelines necessary to confront the global emergency caused by HIV effectively.
