- The EDCTP (European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership) action is a unique collaboration programme between European and sub-Saharan countries to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. It aims to accelerate the development of new drugs or vaccines against these diseases and finances clinical trials in Africa. The EC contribution in this programme has reached EUR 200 million up to now. This FP6 project will end in 2010 but it is planned to continue support under FP7.
These are a few examples of clinical trials in the cancer area:
- The TRANSBIG Network of Excellence has developed a clinical trial called MINDACT (Microarray for Node Negative Disease may Avoid Chemotherapy). This trial compares two different ways of assessing the risk that a woman's breast cancer will come back. It is a validation study benefiting from an EC contribution of EUR 7 million under the 6th framework programme.
- CONTICANET (CONnective Tissue Cancers NETwork to integrate European Experience in Adults and Children) provides the infrastructure to test several drugs in patients with soft tissue cancers. The project received a EUR 9.4 million contribution.
- CANCERIMMUNOTHERAPY (Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy) has for objective to develop anti-cancer vaccines with the help of clinical trials of vaccination. It received a EUR 12.2 million contribution.
