Workshop "Transatlantic Synergies to Promote Effective Traumatic Brain Injury Research"
American Association for the Advancement of Science, 19 February 2011, Washington, USA
The European Commission (EC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) organised this symposium as a strategic follow-up to the TBI workshop held in Las Vegas in June 2010. The aim was two-fold:
- create an opportunity for representatives of funding agencies to discuss the feasibility of a coordinated effort in traumatic brain injury (TBI);
- make the scientific community aware of the renewed interest of funders towards clinical TBI research.
The workshop discussion showed an interest of EU and US funding agencies in working together in priorities where an international effort would bring clear added value, in particular data collection, data sharing and comparative effectiveness research

Since sharing clinical data, standards and best practices requires the involvement of a majority of the scientific and medical community, it was decided to organise a follow up workshop in Brussels that was open to other interested funding agencies and organisations. The aim was to see if there was the necessary momentum, interest and critical mass to launch an international initiative.
