In FP7, support of research on model organisms continues. At the beginning of 2008, the EC launched the 12 million large collaborative project LUPA, which aims at elucidating the molecular basis of common complex human disorders using the dog as a model system. In 2010 two other projects will be launched. EURATRANS (10.5 million ) will use the rat as a model system to identify the major functional pathways underlying human inflammatory, cardiovascular and metabolic, and behavioural disorders. ZF-HEALTH (11.30 million ) will study the genetic bases of brain development, behavioural, and neurological disorders in the zebrafish system, areas of research for which it is uniquely suited; homologous of the human genes related to diabetes and obesity, as well as infectious disease and cancer will be also studied.
