In FP7, support of research on model organisms continues. At the beginning of 2008, the EC launched the €12 million large collaborative project LUPA, which aims at elucidating the molecular basis of common complex human disorders using the dog as a model system. In 2010 two other projects will be launched. EURATRANS (10.5 million €) will use the rat as a model system to identify the major functional pathways underlying human inflammatory, cardiovascular and metabolic, and behavioural disorders. ZF-HEALTH (11.30 million €) will study the genetic bases of brain development, behavioural, and neurological disorders in the zebrafish system, areas of research for which it is uniquely suited; homologous of the human genes related to diabetes and obesity, as well as infectious disease and cancer will be also studied.
