Mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 (MTCT) is still a severe problem, though in high-income countries antiretroviral drugs have had a large impact. The consortium proposes to organise an international network on HIV-1 MTCT prevention and care with the intention of outlining the needs of integration and promoting interaction between public health programmes, clinical, social and basic research. A group composed of about 30 worldwide representatives, experts in fields relevant to HIV-1 MTCT prevention and care, such as anthropology, epidemiology, obstetrics, paediatrics, infectious diseases, public healthcare, immunology, virology and microbiology, have gathered to promote the activity of the network. Their action will take place through topic-specific working groups, whose aim is to identify areas requiring implementation, and a committee, which will work in a concerted action with national and international healthcare programme agencies.
