Aim of the conference
We are living in the age of life sciences and Europe has a strong track record in this field. The life sciences sector can contribute significantly to the Lisbon objective of Europe becoming the most competitive knowledge based economy in the world. Therefore, basic research in the life sciences should be a high priority in Europe with commensurate levels of funding, both for single-lab research and collaborative research. The aim of this conference is to discuss strategies for fostering synergies between organisations that provide funding for basic research in the life sciences in Europe. Such synergies would be expected to lead to new funding opportunities for basic research in the life sciences.
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research is organising the conference in collaboration with a high level Steering Group of representatives of the life sciences research and policy/funding communities. There will be 300 invited participants. Prominent speakers will share their experiences of different approaches to funding of life sciences research from both national and trans-national perspectives.
Participants will include policy makers and senior managers of programmes of national, European and other organisations that are involved (in)-directly in funding basic life sciences research in Europe, directors of national and international research councils, scientists of leading European academic institutes, representatives of European Parliament, industry and industry organisations, and media.
