Panos Kanavos (BSc, MSc (Oxon), MSc (LSE), PhD) is Senior Lecturer in International Health Policy in the Department of Social Policy, London School of Economics (LSE) and Head of the Medical Technology Research Unit (MTRU) at LSE Health. Panos is Visiting Professor at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland and Visiting Senior Lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He is an Economist by training, currently coordinates the Programme in Health Policy Planning and Financing at LSE and teaches Health Economics, Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy, Health Care Financing, and Health Systems Performance Measurement.
Panos leads the activities of MTRU, which is a research unit comprising 14 researchers within LSE Health and concentrates on interdisciplinary and comparative policy research on medical technologies. The unit has a number of research streams as follows:
- he economics of medical technologies, in particular, medicines and medical devices;
- Prescribing, appropriateness and quality of care;
- Access to medical technologies in developing and transition economies; and
- Disease management and policy effectiveness medical technology.
Panos has acted as an advisor to a number of international governmental and nongovernmental organizations, including the European Commission, the European Parliament, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the American Association for Retired Persons, and Ministries of Health of over 21 transition and developing countries.
