José Manuel SILVA RODRIGUEZ
José Manuel Silva Rodríguez has been Director General for Research since 2006.
He joined the European Commission when Spain became a Member State of the EU in 1986, as a member of the cabinet of the Vice-President Manuel Marín.
He has held different positions in DG Agriculture for twenty years, as Head of Unit for processed fruit and vegetables division, Tobacco division, wine, spirits and derived products division, Chief advisor of the Directorate General of Agriculture and Director of the Common Market Organisation for Vegetable Products. In 1997 he became Deputy Director General of Agriculture responsible for rural development, and in 1999, Director General for Agriculture and Rural Development.
Previous to his arrival to the Commission, Mr. Silva was a Counsellor in agricultural affairs for the Spanish Government and member of the delegation for the Spanish accession negotiations. He has also worked for the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Trade, in the Directorate general of Internal Trade and in the Directorate General of Trade Policy.
Since 1971 until his incorporation into SOIVRE, while an inspector in the Ministry of Economy and Trade, he was a professor at the School of Agricultural Engineers in Madrid and worked in the private sector in export companies as well as on animal food projects.
Mr. Silva holds a degree in Agricultural Engineering, a degree in External Trade and a Diploma in European Communities.
He lives in Brussels with his wife and has two children.
