The aim of the "Detection, diagnosis and monitoring" area is to develop visualisation, imaging, detection and analytical tools and technologies for biomedical research, for prediction, diagnosis, monitoring and prognosis of diseases, and for support and guidance of therapeutic interventions. The focus is on a multidisciplinary approach integrating domains such as: molecular and cellular biology, physiology, genetics, physics, chemistry, biomedical engineering, nanotechnologies, microsystems, devices and information technologies. Non- or minimally- invasive and quantitative methods and quality assurance aspects are emphasised.

Methods and techniques used for diagnosis are typically subdivided into in-vitro diagnostics (molecular testing and in-vitro imaging) based on biological samples like tissue, blood or urine, and in-vivo diagnostics (in-vivo imaging).
