A new handbook directed at the European toy industry explains how and when advanced technologies and software can be applied during toy design and prototyping phases.

Traditionally, each link in the chain of toy production has operated in relative isolation, using its own often outdated methods, with little concern for the other links from supplier to designer, from modeller to mould maker, from dealer to consumer. New technologies like process control, CAD/CAM/CAE software and stereolithography provide much greater potential for flexible and efficient toy design and production, but they are still not being used effectively within the industry.

This project concerned the preparation of a handbook directed at the European toy industry, explaining how and when advanced technologies can be applied during toy design and prototyping phases. The goals were to help producers to rethink their traditional modes of action and to present those technologies that can help to increase productivity, quality and competitiveness within the European toy sector.

Having successfully introduced their handbook, partners are now expanding their target group to include other producers in child-related sectors including child care articles, children's food, children's furniture, shoes and fashion. A software system is also in preparation for use in internal networks of toy and children's articles manufacturers.
