Software packages for the cost calculation, functional layout and detailed design of moulds for plastic injection help to reduce design and manufacturing errors.
 

The annual worldwide consumption of plastics materials is approximately 130 million tonnes. Of this amount about a third is processed by injection moulding. Not only is this the most widely used method for converting raw plastics into final products, but it is arguably the most sophisticated.

This project resulted in stand-alone, industrial software packages for the cost calculation, functional layout and detailed design of manufacturing moulds for plastic injection. The new software is extremely user friendly and helps to reduce design and manufacturing errors. Similar software products that already exist on the market, like I-CAD, have so far not been affordable for SMEs.

This project has enabled the Irish SME partner to become a world market leader in the limited and very specialised market of CAD plastic injection moulds. Furthermore, 85% of its income now comes from sales of the new system in the USA. Although further development and promotional work has been carried out since the end of the project, partners say Brite-Euram provided an indispensable financial and scientific springboard.
