Very powerful permanent magnets, ten times more powerful than traditional magnets, allow reductions in size and improvements in the performance of a wide variety of devices.
 

Magnets and magnetised elements are fundamental components in a wide variety of modern electrical and mechanical systems, including acoustic transducers, motors, generators, magnetos and magnetic field and imaging systems. High performance permanent magnets can be found in televisions, telephones, computers, audio systems and automobiles.

This fundamental research project was aimed at developing new rare earth magnets ten times more powerful than traditional magnets, allowing reductions in size and improvements in the performance of a wide variety of devices. For example, electromotors in computer hard disks will work faster thanks to the reduced weight and inertia of internal magnets, reducing accessing time.

Partners say their results represent a major step forward in our understanding of how permanent magnets work, enabling several European SMEs to enter the high-end segment of the magnets market. At last count, the published results of the project had been referred to over 5,000 times and four members of the project team had moved from research into leading industrial positions.
