Improved quality and production methods, including delamination and grinding, for controlling particle characteristics like size and shape mean improved quality and reduced costs.
 

Among the oldest of all production materials, naturally occurring minerals are still being used today in many applications, including as fillers and pigments. While today's technologies require much finer control of quality and characteristics, conventional control methods either cannot provide information on particle shape or are too slow to be used in process control.

This project aimed at developing better and faster quality assessment and control methods, capable of determining particle characteristics like size and shape which are most relevant with respect to end-use applications. Partners combined key studies on mineral delamination behaviour, and reappraised the performance of many grinding and classification processes. They also selected processing flow sheets, equipment and reagents which promote energy savings.

The three SME partners, all involved in mineral production, have already seen significant internal gains resulting from lower energy consumption, increased capacity, and from sales of higher value-added products.
