Improved sputtering in the production of electrochromic devices like television and computer screens means higher quality, lower prices and increased European competitivity.

The manufacture of flat panel displays and electrochromic devices like television and computer screens involves a technique called sputtering - the deposition of a thin film of particles on a target surface. Systems for performing this procedure have been plagued in the past by malfunctions, including the appearance of black nodules that grow on target surfaces causing premature shutdowns and subsequent rejection of unfinished or flawed pieces during sputtering.

The objectives of the project were to develop raw materials, equipment and techniques for the manufacturing of high-quality ITO glass coatings with improved transparency and conductivity. During the project, a high-density indium tin oxide and an improved sputtering system were developed and tested. The origin of the black nodules was also understood and clarified, and a system for recycling targets containing valuable indium was developed and implemented.

For consumers, the results mean lower-cost and better-quality flat panels, say partners. For European producers, it means a new edge in an enormous global market, especially in the Far East. The success of the project is attributed to an outstanding partnership, a vertical consortium in which each partner is a world leader in its area of activity.
