The problem

The twin objectives of sustainability and security of supply drive European energy policy. New energy technologies will be key to achieving these objectives. However, for the purpose of supporting EU policy goals, data on new energy technologies is fragmented and insufficiently integrated with data on end-use efficiency and research expenditure. There is a need for a coordinated system to validate, organise and make accessible the data needed to underpin policies and strategies that promote renewable energy and supply security.

Overview:

SRS NET & EEE responds to the need for improved energy data management by establishing a Scientific Reference System (SRS) to support policy initiatives.

The project will:

• Validate and organise data on new energy technologies (NET) and end-user efficiency (EEE) using the best available statistical methods to ensure the reliability and accuracy of information
• Integrate data on RTD expenditure for all energy technologies since the 1960s with other energy data
• Construct a harmonised framework for energy data encompassing all EU-25 Member States
• Provide a forum and decision-support system for all stakeholders.

Contribution to policy development:

• Enhanced quality, reliability and availability of energy data will provide a better overview for policy-makers
• Harmonised and validated data will support sustainable development policy
• Improved data to support measures for global climate change mitigation
• A platform to facilitate EU-25 energy policy harmonisation and promote European integration
