Energy - Gauging the effectiveness of clean and renewable alternatives

“Towards the greater use of renewable energy in Mediterranean states.”

The problem

Few southern and eastern Mediterranean countries are hydrocarbon-exporting countries but all are energy-dependent. In addition, they are all facing rapid demographic growth, urbanisation and high socio-economic development; all of which translate into new and growing needs for energy services. At the same time, all of them have a high potential for utilising renewable energy resources, especially wind and solar, as well as improving their energy use and efficiency. These opportunities need to be assessed and policies developed to maximise their contribution to these nations’ social and economic development.

REMAP  Renewable energy in the Mediterranean area

Overview:

REMAP will work with key stakeholders to:

  • Compile a solar and wind-energy resource atlas for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean area
  • Identify and prioritise potential demonstration sites for wind and concentrated solar projects in Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan and Turkey
  • Recommend proposals for major stakeholders to develop several wind and concentrated solar energy projects
  • Propose a credible financing scheme for priority renewable demonstration projects
  • Develop an action plan for a few well-identified initiatives suitable for implementation

Contribution to policy development:

  • REMAP will provide better knowledge of the wind- and solar-energy resources available in the Mediterranean region and highlight investment opportunities.
  • Proposals will be developed to enable decision-makers to apply consistent, targeted and effective policies across the EU.
  • REMAP will prepare a portfolio of potential solar-concentration and wind-power projects matched to an action plan for high-priority renewable energy initiatives.
  • The action plan will contribute to the economic, social and environmental development across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
