The problem

A lot of information has been published in recent years on electricity provision and demand. However, convergent approaches to research and data handling have made it difficult to use these studies to assess future European energy requirements. Policy-makers need a critical review and evaluation of existing studies, papers and policy reports before they make important decisions about energy issues that will affect the economic and social life of Europe’s citizens.

Overview:

EUSUSTEL aims to furnish the European Commission and EU Member States with guidelines and recommendations that will help them optimise future electricity provision and generation in a way that guarantees an affordable, clean, reliable – and thus sustainable – electricity supply system.

The project will:

• Review and analyse electricity provision in all Member States to identify weaknesses in electricity generation and provision in terms of cost, environmental impact and security of supply
• Make projections of future demand for energy services
• Analyse regulatory frameworks and their impact on the liberalisation of the electricity market

Contribution to policy development:

• The project will provide the EU and Member States with a clearer picture of future electricity demand, which will help them to plan and develop their energy policies.
• EUSUSTEL supports the EU’s desire to place sustainability at the top of the energy policy agenda.
• The project’s results will feed into policies that aim to liberalise Europe’s electricity market.
