“Integrating EU agri-food research through to 2020.”

The problem

Most EU acceding and candidate states have an agricultural research institute or similar entity. With so many nations, individual national concerns and priorities, there is an inevitable multiplicity of research programmes, many of which should be complementary but some may represent duplication. This raises the need for a communication portal to facilitate discussion and development of an EU-wide integrated and prioritised agri-research programme. This facilitation will optimise the socio-economic and cost-benefit of EU agri-research through to 2020.

EU AGRI MAPPING  Better coordinated European agricultural and food research

Overview:

EU AGRIMAPPING will establish a database of research establishments from the new member, acceding and candidate countries involved in agricultural and food research. The project will:

  • Carry out a mapping exercise to identify the main agricultural research institutes and summarise current trends and future needs for agricultural and food research
  • Establish an expert advisory team from EU member and associated states (e.g. Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) to identify gaps in current and projected research efforts and set priorities for development and support of these institutions over the period to 2020

Contribution to policy development:

  • The Council of Ministers and the Commission will be informed of the current status of agricultural and food research across acceding and candidate nations.
  • Shortcomings and gaps in research programmes will be identified and prioritised recommendations prepared for future programmes.
  • Policy recommendations will help to identify the socio-economic and cost-benefits to be gained by closer integration of future research in the field.

Project deliverables

  • Presentation of project methodology – March 2006
