Title: Advanced protection systems
Acronym:   APROSYS
Project summary:   The IP on Advanced Protective Systems (APROSYS) will focus on scientific and technology development in the field of passive safety (crash safety). The field of passive safety concerns in particular human biomechanics (injury mechanisms and criteria), vehicle and infrastructure crashworthiness and occupant and road user protection systems. The general objective of APROSYS is the development and introduction of critical technologies that improve passive safety for all European road users in all-relevant accident types and accident severities.
Title: High efficiency engine R&D on combustion with ultra low emissions for ships
Acronym:   HERCULES
Project summary:   The HERCULES IP will develop new technologies to drastically reduce gaseous and particulate emissions from marine engines and concurrently increase engine efficiency and reliability, hence reduce specific fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and engine lifecycle costs.
Title: Assessment for future traffic demands and longer lives
Acronym:   Sustainable Bridges
Project summary:   In order to double (or even treble) the transportation by rail during the coming 20 years the capacity of the railway bridges needs to be increased. The objectives of this project are to:
  • Increase the transport capacity of existing bridges by allowing axle loads up to 33 tonnes for freight traffic with moderate speeds or for speeds up to 350 km/hour for passenger traffic with low axle loads
  • Increase the residual service lives of existing bridges with up to 25%
  • Enhance management, strengthening, and repair systems.
Much research has been carried out related to this area but there is a need for integration, innovative development and testing in order to establish procedures for the safe and effective management and upgrading of railway bridges.
Title: Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies for Road Transport
Acronym:   HyTRAN
Project summary:   Two innovative Fuel Cell Systems for automotive application will be developed within specific Technological Platforms:
  • TP1 'Powertrain' development of a system for traction power by an 80 kW direct hydrogen PEM fuel cell system implemented on a passenger car
  • TP2 'APU' development of 10 kW Auxiliary Power Unit for both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, including micro-structured diesel oil steam reformer, cleanup reactors, an innovative reformate hydrogen stack and balance of plant components.
Title: Innovative modular vehicle concepts for an integrated European railway system
Acronym:   MODTRAIN
Project summary:   To meet the exacting performance improvements identified in the business scenarios listed in the ERRAC Strategic Rail Research Agenda as overall transport growth and transport demand increase, reliable, affordable and attractive interoperable rolling stock must become the norm for use on European networks. For this, interoperable constituents must be defined, validated and promoted at European industry level. Initially, this project will concentrate on fixed formation passenger trains and Universal Locomotives capable of 200 km/h and more, but as work advances it is hoped to extend this scope to embrace all rolling stock likely to operate over the high speed and conventional interoperable networks.
Title: Integrated collaborative design and production of cruise vessels, passenger ships and ropax
Acronym:   InterSHIP
Project summary:   The proposal aims to increase the competitiveness of EU shipbuilders by better integrating tools and methods for design and manufacturing of complex one-of-a-kind vessels. InterSHIP will enable shipyard engineers to consider leading edge knowledge in environmental aspects, safety, comfort, and cost efficiency in simultaneous engineering, thus making sure, that optimum solutions can be obtained for the total lifecycle of complex ships. InterSHIP will also focus on improving vertical integration between shipyards, owners, suppliers, classification societies and horizontal cooperation between EU shipyards. Aspects like education and training, innovation management in shipyards and cooperation with other projects and industries will be covered in horizontal actions, making sure that the project results are quickly implemented for the benefit of the entire European maritime community.
Title: New integrated combustion system for future passenger car engines
Acronym:   NICE
Project summary:   The main objective of the project is to develop a new integrated combustion system that, independently of the type of fuel (i.e. fuel neutral), is able to achieve today's highest fuel conversion efficiency of the DI diesel engine (43%), while complying with a zero-impact emission level.
Title: Optimisation of hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines
Acronym:   HYCE
Project summary:   The project examines possibilities of an efficiency enhancement of a hydrogen internal combustion engine. As a result of the project, down sized engines with a similar performance to today's fossil fuel powered vehicles would be feasible. The project is complementary to other projects in the fuel and power train cluster. In addition, there are important spin-offs possible for stationary power generation.
Title: Energy conversion in engines
Acronym:   ECO-ENGINES
Project summary:   The objective of this NoE is to set-up a Virtual Research Centre (VRC) on advanced engine combustion modes for road transport, with special emphasis on the use of alternative and renewable fuels, and to establish it as a world reference in the domain. The VRC will structure the excellence of European research on all aspects of new generations of high efficiency, low CO2 and noise, near zero emission engine combustion processes like CAI, HCCI or CCS, and other emerging high potential techniques.
Title: European rail research network of excellence
Acronym:   EUR2EX
Project summary:   The strategic objectives of the European Rail Research Network of Excellence are:
  1. To integrate the fragmented European Rail Research landscape by networking together the critical mass of resources and expertise to provide European leadership and be a world class player
  2. To promote the railway contribution to sustainable transport policy
  3. To improve the competitiveness and economic stability of the railway sector and industry.
Title: Network of excellence on advanced passive safety
Acronym:   APSN
Project summary:   Following the mobilisation of critical R&D mass on vehicle passive safety in EU Thematic Network projects like PSN & EVPSN2, this Network of Excellence aims at a durable, integrated European vehicle passive safety research & implementation programme and creation of a Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE). It is the ultimate aim of the NoE to strive for the creation of a permanent organisation (VCE) in the field of passive safety for road transport at European level.
Title: Network of excellence in marine structures
Acronym:   MARSTRUCT
Project summary:   The overall objective of the network is to improve the comfort, effectiveness, safety, reliability and environmental behaviour of ship structures through the application of advanced structural and reliability assessment within design, fabrication and operation, leading to increased public and commercial confidence in the competitiveness and use of waterborne transportation.
