Introduction EURATOM and the FP6 Research into nuclear energy is carried out under the Sixth (2002-2006) Framework Programme (FP6) of the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) for nuclear research and training activities. The EURATOM FP6 (budget: 1230 million Euro) is officially distinct from the European Community (EC) Sixth Framework Programme (budget 16270 million Euro), as they fall under different treaties and have slightly different rules regarding participation and dissemination of information. The EURATOM FP6 comprises two distinct parts: a ‘direct’ action and an ‘indirect’ action. The indirect action is the main mechanism for Community research, technological development and training (RTDT) actions whereas the direct action is complementary to the indirect action and is carried out by the European Communities Joint Research Centre (JRC). The indirect action programme has the following thematic priority areas:
