Born
in Helsinki (Finland) in 1939. Currently President and Director
General of the Academy of Finland.
Research
work was on mechanisms of sex hormone action and hormone-dependent
cancer.
Member
of the Science and Technology Policy Council of Finland chaired by
the Prime Minister. Several memberships in international research
organisations and associations, including ESF Governing Council
(since 2000).
Member
of the Nordic Science Policy Council (1992-99 and chair in 1996), of
the High Council of the European University Institute in Florence,
Italy (since 1997), and of the Scientific and Technical Advisory
Group of the World Health Organisation. In October 2000, Professor
Vihko was elected Chairman of the European Union Research
Organisations Heads of Research Councils (EUROHORCS) (2000-02).
Member
of the expert group for International Evaluation of Danish Health
Research Panel on Biochemistry and a member for the Evaluation Group
of Danish Graduate Schools.
