Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Marquardt studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, from 1976 to 1982. He earned a PhD degree at the same university in 1988. He held post-doctoral appointments at the University of Stuttgart and at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA.

Mr. Marquardt was appointed as a full professor of process systems engineering at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, in 1993. Among his awards is the Leibniz-Award of the German Science Foundation (DFG) in 2001. Mr. Marquardt has held numerous positions in research councils and advisory bodies. Since 2010 he is member and since 2011 the Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities.

The German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) is one of the leading science policy advisory bodies in Germany. It provides advice to the German federal government and the state (Länder) governments on the structure and development of higher education and research.
