Mr Costas Iacovou is an economist with studies at the University of Athens and at the London School of Economics. He is a holder of a diploma on Investment Appraisal and Management from the University of Harvard and he has been working with the Planning Bureau of Cyprus since 1983.
As from 2000 he holds the position of a Director (Directorate for Competitiveness and Research), and his responsibilities include, inter alia, the formulation and development of a national strategy and policy on Science and Research. He provides assistance and advice to the Minister of Finance on aspects of development policies, as well as for his preparation for the Competitiveness Council on issues relating to Science and Research.
Mr. Iacovou is a member of the ERAC Committee, member of the SESAME Council (Synchrotron-Light Experimental Scientific Applications in the Middle East), member of HLG of EUREKA, member of the Monitoring Committees for Scientific and Technological Co-operation within the Euro-Med region, and member of the Cyprus Fulbright Commission.
He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Research Council (Cyprus), and during 2007-10 he also served as a Director, as a Secretary and as an Acting Executive Chairman of a state owned charter airline.
During the negotiations for the accession of Cyprus to the EU, (1998-2003) Mr Iacovou served as Head of the Cypriot Negotiations Delegation for the chapters of Science and Research, Free Movement of Goods and Free Movement of Persons, and member of the Cypriot delegation for the negotiations on chapters Telecommunications and Information Society, Industry, Small and Medium Enterprises and Social Policy and Employment.
