Achilleas Mitsos was born in 1947. He holds a University degree (1970) from ASOEE (Athens School for Economics and Business Studies), and a Masters (economics) (1972) and a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, USA (1975).
Achilleas Mitsos is Secretary General for Research at the Greek Ministry of Education. He was the European Commission’s Director General for Research (2000-2005) and, before that, Head of the Department on relations with the EEC at the Bank of Greece (1976), Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1981), Head of Cabinet of Commissioner G. Varfis (1985), European Commission’s Director for the Coordination of Structural Interventions (1987), Vocational Training (1993), Human Potential and Socio-Economic Research (1996).
He has been elected Professor of ‘International Economic Relations and the Environment’ at the University of Aegean, Greece. He is Visiting Professor at the University Center for International Studies of the University of Pittsburgh, USA, and he was until recently visiting professor at the Lonodn School of Economics and Political Science. He is the author of many articles and four books on international economics and European integration.
