The governance in terms of assessment and management of risk has faced many difficulties in both the nuclear and other industries perceived as hazardous. Current approaches are exposed as weak and there are strong pressures for new approaches that afford greater opportunity for wider stakeholder involvement.
European research has and continues to focus on the development of better approaches to risk that can find broad technical and social acceptance and can contribute to the more effective and rational use of resources in nuclear safety.
Following analysis of a number of case studies new paradigms have emerged that have much potential. Future research will test their efficacy in practice and guidance will be developed on their application in the nuclear sector.
