2010 EURANOS project handbooks

The Euroepan Commission through the EURANOS project in Euratom FP6 has supported the development of three standalone generic handbooks for managing contaminated food production systems, inhabited areas and drinking watter suplies following a radiological incident. The handbooks contain state-of-the-art information on more than 100 management options. The handbooks can be used as a preparatory tool, under non-crisis conditions to engage stackeholders and to develop national regional and local plans. The handbooks can be applied as part of the decision-aiding process to develop a recovery strategy following an incident. In addition, the handbooks are useful for training purposes and during emergency exercises.

2009 Report of High Level and Expert Group on European Low Dose Risk Research

This report of the High Level and Expert Group (HLEG) on European Low Dose Risk Research, published in January 2009, summarizes key policy issues for ionising radiation risk management and describes both the state of science and the main challenges in low dose risk research. Based on this, a European research strategy is proposed with the key element of creating a European Platform, to be named MELODI: Multidisciplinary European LOw Dose Initiative. In addition key concepts are identified that should be incorporated into the scientific strategy for such a multi-disciplinary low dose initiative. Five Member States (Finland, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom), the Commission as well as eight representatives of the research community with recognised high level expertise in low dose risk research contributed to this report.

A sustainable use of nuclear energy in the future will only be achieved if a more permanent and safe solution for the long-term management of spent fuel and highlevel radioactive wastes meets with public acceptance. Deep geological disposal of these wastes is the preferred solution. Research for implementing disposal is being conducted in all countries with nuclear power. Chemical separation and transmutation of the most hazardous radionuclides from the waste could further increase the long-term safety of underground repositories. Disposal of the less hazardous low and intermediate level radioactive waste at or near the surface is well established and implemented in several countries.
