Nuclear energy today provides about 35% of electricity in Europe. It is an important factor in reducing Europe's energy dependence. However, over the past two decades it has been the centre of much controversy - so much so that several European countries have decided to dispense with it. No doubt the reservations have more to do with the issue of waste management than the safety of installations. But the nuclear sector has one major benefit: producing no greenhouse gases, it is - alongside with renewable energies - a particularly sustainable means of producing electricity.

The main concern in the disposal of radioactive waste in deep geological sites is related to long-lived radionuclides. Partitioning (chemical separation) and transmutation (radionuclide conversion) techniques offer the possibility of reducing the long-lived component of the waste, thus easing the waste management problem. The brochure outlines the Commission-funded research in this area.

  • Radioactive Waste Management – For a safe and sustainable use of nuclear energy Radioactive Waste Management – For a safe and sustainable use of nuclear energy PDF icon EN - FR - DE[±300 Kb]

A sustainable use of nuclear energy in the future will only be achieved if a more permanent and safe solution for the long-term management of spent fuel and highlevel radioactive wastes meets with public acceptance. Deep geological disposal of these wastes is the preferred solution. Research for implementing disposal is being conducted in all countries with nuclear power. Chemical separation and transmutation of the most hazardous radionuclides from the waste could further increase the long-term safety of underground repositories. Disposal of the less hazardous low and intermediate level radioactive waste at or near the surface is well established and implemented in several countries.

Radiation protection is highly multi-disciplinary and covers a diverse range of issues. The main focus of research over the past decade and for the foreseeable future is the better quantification and understanding of the risks of radiation at levels typical of those occuring in the workplace and the environment. This will be achieved by a combination of cellular and molecular biology research on the interaction between radiation and molecules (DNA), cells and organs, and epidemiological studies of exposed populations.
