1st Coordinating Committee meeting of the "Agreement for Co-operation between the Government of the Republic of India and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) in the field of Fusion Energy Research"


The referred Agreement entered into force in May 2010. Its first constitutive Coordinating Committee (CC-1) meeting was held on 8 October 2010 at the Indian Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) in Gandhinagar (India).

The Indian delegation of eighteen members was headed by Prof. Pucadyil Ittoop JOHN (Meghnad Saha Chair at IPR), while the Euratom delegation of four members was headed by Dr. Alejandro ZURITA (RTD-J.1 Euratom International Agreements). The main CC-1 outcome was the following:

Both parties agreed to review and adopted the inventory of about 20 collaborative activities between five Indian entities and nine Euratom fusion associations. In this respect, the CC adopted specific protocols to be followed for future new collaborative projects.

On the potential institutionalised partnership of India in the JET programme of operation and exploitation, both Parties agreed to held bilateral discussion on technical content and how to organize Indian In-kind and personnel contribution. On this regard an Indian team would be sent to JET for on-site study.

Moreover, India announced its intention to check the feasibility of a potential Indian participation in specific activities and projects under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement under the framework of the 'Guidelines on participation of other ITER Parties in BA Activities'. On this regard India has sent a formal communication to Euratom Directorate, expressing its desire to join and request for necessary technical information. This will be treated within the framework of the BA Steering Committee by appropriate Euratom and Japanese delegates.

The CC adopted the bilateral EU-IN Work Programme composed of the following topics:

  • Specific collaborations between Indian and Euratom entities, which can be extended with new proposals discussed at this CC-1 meeting
  • Potential partnership cooperation in the JET programme
  • Potential Indian participation in projects of the Broader Approach Agreement between Euratom and Japan
