European Month of the Brain - May 2013

Conference in Dublin logo

Healthy brain: healthy Europe
A new horizon for brain research and health care

Of all diseases, brain disorders present Europe's largest health and socioeconomic burden. In 2010, the estimated combined cost to EU member states and associated countries was €798 billion, which is comparable to the cost of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes combined.

Effective management of health, social, educational, employment and productivity costs will not be achieved by improvements in healthcare delivery alone. Rather, the solution lies in new, integrated and innovative national efforts that capitalise on our research strengths and deliver real health benefits. Such an approach requires a deeper understanding of brain function coupled with overarching national efforts that are coordinated, cooperative, are focused on health outcomes and meet the needs of patients, carers and industry alike.

This conference aims at delivering policy recommendations for brain research and healthcare.
Make your voice heard!

In particular, the objectives are to:
Encourage public authorities to (i) reinforce coordination and optimisation of resources in brain research and healthcare and (ii) develop national brain research and healthcare strategies.
Help lift taboos associated with brain health issues.
Highlight the need for the right infrastructures, policies and regulatory environment in order to encourage innovation and industrial activities in this area.
Facilitate the absorption and integration of research results into policy and good practice,
Advance the practical application of the new paradigm of brain research and healthcare, taking better into account patient needs.

This conference brings together renowned experts to highlight why policy-makers across the EU member states and associated countries should devise, or refine, national strategies on brain research and healthcare. Key stakeholders, such as policymakers, representatives from ministries, funding agencies, industry, patient organisations, researchers and health professionals will be among the participants.
