Lena Gustafsson

Lena Gustafsson, is since 2006 Deputy Director General of VINNOVA, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems. She received her PhD in Microbiology at Göteborg University 1980. In 1999 she was appointed Professor in Biotechnology at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg. Lena Gustafsson was the Director of the Botanical Institute, 1983-1986, and of the Department of Marine Microbiology, 1986-1989. She was the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Göteborg University, 1997-1999, and became the Director of the new Department of Molecular Biotechnology, 1999-2002, after her move to Chalmers, and subsequently the Pro Vice-chancellor of Chalmers, 2003-2006.

Lena Gustafsson has been acting in Swedish research funding organizations (TFR, SJFR, VR, VINNOVA, Swedish National Space Board, SIDA’s Research Cooperation) and has been and is member of numerous scientific national and international boards (Chairman of the Board of the Nordic Innovation Center (NICe), 2008) and committees. She is member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) – section X and is member of IVA´s Business Executives Council. Her scientific work has focused on energy metabolism and regulation of energy flows in lower eukaryotic systems, like yeast, and their use as model systems and in industrial biotechnology.
