José Ignacio Alonso received the Telecommunications Engineer and Ph. D. degrees from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), Madrid, Spain, in 1982 and 1989, respectively.
From 1982 to 1985 he worked as a Microwave Design Engineer at Telettra España S.A. In 1985 he joined the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications, UPM, where he is currently Full Professor.
He has developed his research in the areas of the analysis and simulation of high speed/high-frequency integrated circuits and their interconnections, the computeraided design and measurements of hybrid and GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) and their applications in the development and implementation of mobile, optical-fiber and communications systems. Likewise, he has been worked in the development of broadband point-multipoint radio systems (LMDS) in millimetre frequencies and the planning of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and its potential applications.
He has participated in more than 40 research projects and contracts, financed by national an international institutions and companies. He has authored more than 100 publications in scientific journals, symposium proceedings, seminars and reports. He has been during seven years collaborator of the National Board of Research in the Education and Science and Science and Innovation Ministries. He has been also member of expert panel of Information Society Technologies in the elaboration of the Spanish Research National Program 2008-2011 and he has participated, as member of Spanish expert panel, in the elaboration of the “R&D and Innovation in Spain: Improving the Policy Mix”, carried out by the OECD Working Party on Innovation and Technology Policy. He is Chairman of IEEE Spanish Chapter of MTT/AP Societies. He is actually Deputy Director General of Planning, Studies and Monitoring of Ministry for Science and Innovation, Spain.
