Currently Principal of the Faculty of Engineering, Imperial College, London responsible for an annual turnover in excess of £100 million

Founder board member responsible for the construction of the Diamond Light Source, the largest investment in scientific equipment for 30 years in the UK

Previously Chief Executive and Accounting Officer for the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils responsible for 1800 staff and an annual turnover of £310million in 2006/7. Reporting to the Director General Science and Innovation in the Office of Science and Innovation.

Elected Chair of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) unanimously by all Member States and the EU Commission reporting to the Commissioner for Research. Delivered first ever European Roadmap for large research infrastructures in 2006 which is now widely consulted by both European and other countries

Elected chair of the European X-ray Free Electron Project Council by national delegates. This is a 1.1 B€ project to be built at DESY in Hamburg, Germany

Extensive interactions with other Advanced Countries at Governmental level on science and engineering policy and partnerships including in the Middle and Far East.

Head of University Department for 10 years and subsequently Dean of Engineering at a top UK university

Proven track record of successful interfacing between academia and industry which is recognised by all sectors including government

Appointed as Chair of the UK Government’s Foresight Panel on Materials producing the second Foresight report in 2000. Chair of many national and international panels as a result of efficient and fair running of meetings.

Frequently invited to give prestige lectures and important after dinner speeches.

Elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of contribution to materials science and engineering, innovative strategic planning and activities within engineering education

Honoured with a CBE for “services to science.”
