Arvid Hallén, born 1950. Graduated with a mag. art degree in sociology at the University of Oslo in 1977 with a thesis on “Reindustrialization in marginal regions”. Did research in local government studies and regional studies at the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR) from 1978-1986. Director of the institute from 1987 to 1995, when he was appointed executive director of the Division for Culture and Society in the Research Council of Norway. Hallén is Chief executive/Director General of the Research Council of Norway since 2004.
