Brussels, 9-11 March 2005
Core issues for debate
This session will reflect upon the range of ways through which science interacts with policy-making in democratic societies, and especially at the EU level. It will review the following modalities, active in the relationship between science, technology and democracy: (i) use of scientific expertise in policy making, (ii) participation of civil society in scientific debates, (iii) risk governance, and (iv) technology foresight. The session will also aim at discussing, on the basis of a concrete case, the role that science plays in policy-making, in particular when trade-offs and conflicting objectives are at stake.
