Specific Support Actions

Specific Support Actions (SSA) support the implementation of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), and may also be used, through communications activities amongst others, to help prepare for future Community research policy activities.

SSAs aim to stimulate, encourage and facilitate the participation of SMEs, small research teams, newly developed and remote research centres, as well as organisations from the candidate countries in the activities of the thematic priority areas, particularly in the networks of excellence and the integrated projects.

SSAs are essentially a continuation of the Strategic Accompanying Measures used in FP5 (1998-2002). A document presents general information on these measures [PDF document - 155 Kb].

In relation to the ‘Life Sciences, Genomics and Biotechnology for Health’, and the ‘Food Quality and Safety’ priorities, SSAs will be used to fund projects within the context of 30 key action areas. Information on these areas can be found in the ‘Life sciences and Biotechnology Strategy for Europe’ [PDF document - 176 Kb].
The activities of an SSA project will be supported through an EU grant of up to 100% of the budget or, if necessary, through a lump sum payment.

Wealth of opportunities
Projects supported by SSAs may take various forms. These include concertation, information, communication, dissemination, networking, as well as coordination and forecasting activities, including platforms and forums, web portals, conferences or seminars, studies and analyses, working and expert groups.

A series of sample projects can be viewed by clicking here [PDF document - 628 Kb].

Examples of objectives within the Life sciences and Biotechnology Action Plan

  • Harvesting the potential of life sciences and biotech: investing in researchers
  • Strengthening the capital base for biotechnology (innovation, technology transfer, financing, investment, Biotechnology and Finance Forum)
  • Networking Europe’s biotechnology communities
  • Societal scrutiny and dialogue (public debates, awareness, societal participation, information and communication, including the media)
  • Harmony with ethical values (debate, information, training, ethical guidelines and standards)
  • Harmony with societal goals: socio-economic analysis and forecasting
