Knowledge Based Bio-Economy

Bioeconomy Observatory

The European Bioeconomy Strategy and Action Plan determined the establishment of a European Bioeconomy Observatory pdf - 42 KB [42 KB] .

Within the European Commission, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) was given the task to set up this ambitious project that started in March 2013 and should be concluded by early 2016.

The Bioeconomy Observatory is being created to provide regular analysis and data that will help policy makers and stakeholders to monitor the development of the Bioeconomy. The information and data gathered will be also crucial to support and guide the implementation of the European Bioeconomy Strategy.

The Observatory will mainly seek to get data about the three key pillars highlighted in the Strategy:

  1. Investments in Research, Innovation and Skills (research pillar)
  2. Reinforced policy interaction and stakeholder engagement (policy pillar)
  3. Enhancement of markets and competitiveness in Bioeconomy (markets pillar)

The first main event of the project took place in Brussels on 26 November 2013. The "First Bioeconomy Observatory Stakeholders Roundtable" was organised by the JRC and attended by over 100 stakeholders (policy makers from the EU, Member States and regions, as well as representatives from research, farmers and industry).

The agenda and presentations of this event are available at:
