Network for animal health and welfare in organic agriculture

Contract nr: FAIR-CT98-4405
Project nr:
4405
Project type:
CA

Starting date: 4/01/1999
Duration:
36 months
Total cost:
235,570 EUR
EC Contribution:
235,570 EUR
Scientific Officer:
Pena ALBERDI LUCIA
Research topic:
Animal health
Acronym:
NAHWOA

Objectives:
The primary objective of the project is to improve information exchange between researchers working within the field of organic livestock production, and to produce accessible information for organic livestock producers, advisory bodies, veterinary professionals, and policy-makers on animal welfare husbandry and health within organic livestock production systems.
It is envisaged that improved information sharing will lead to better definition of animal welfare, animal integrity and livestock husbandry standards in organic agriculture. In so doing, the project will contribute towards more successful organic livestock production systems, improved animal welfare and health, and improved customer confidence in organic animal products.
Indirectly, the project will contribute towards increased uniformity in organic standards in various European countries.
The project partners also believe that the project outputs are useful for the entire livestock farming community within the EU.
Ultimately, welfare-friendly livestock production systems will contribute towards a better environment and an improved quality of life, health and welfare for both humans and livestock, as well as towards improved customer confidence in all livestock products.

Description:
The project will achieve these objectives by creating a forum for the scientists working in the field of organic livestock production by establishing a series of workshops, an Internet site and various publications.
The project will consider organic sector bodies, advisory services, government departments, and veterinary organisations as target groups for the project, and will set up a mailing system to reach these groups.
Additionally, the project will produce a book and a series of publications for dissemination.
