Improved methods for the diagnosis of ruminant alphaherpesvirus infections in relation to the control of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (ibr)

Last updating 1999

Contract nr: FAIR-CT95-0316
Project nr: 316
Project type: SC
Starting date: 01/03/1996
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 1,643,900 EUR
EC Contribution: 896,500 EUR
Scientific Officer: Isabel MINGUEZ-TUDELA
Research topic: Animal health
Acronym: DIAGNOSIS OF IBR

Background:
Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) infection in cattle is a disease of major economic concern in Europe, both in countries where this infection has been eradicated and in those where the control of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) is currently or will be undertaken. Successful control of IBR depends on the use of efficient, sensitive and specific diagnostic tests. The efficiency of the existing diagnostic methods is compromised by the existence of serological cross-reactivity between BHV-1 and the other closely related alphaherpesviruses.

Objectives:
The aim of this research is:

  • to assess the risk of cross-infection between BHV-1 and other alphaherpesviruses in ruminants;
  • to develop diagnostic methods capable of differentiating the different ruminant alphaherpesviruses infections.

Description:
The work will be subdivided into 3 phases : in vivo evaluation of cross-infections of cattle; serological differentiation of ruminant alphaaherpesviruses related to BHV-1 and genomic differentiation of ruminant alphaviruses related to BHV-1.
