Introduction
Agricultural research in Portugal should be considered in its
broad sense: sustainable production, diet and nutrition, food safety, ecology,
rural development and landscape management.
National Funding of the Agricultural Research System
The funding of the Portuguese agricultural research system is
mainly conducted under the authority of the Ministry of Science, Technology and
Higher Education and of the Ministry of Agriculture and of Rural and Fisheries
Development.

The main Portuguese Funding Agency of Research is the
Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). This funding agency is the
central body of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, and
has the responsibilities in the promotion, follow-up and evaluation of
Institutes, science and technology projects and programs and also, in the
advanced training and qualification of human resources in the areas under the
this Ministry.

Agência de Inovação,
S.A.) is the Portuguese Innovation Agency with a main goal
of promoting innovation and technological development, through the strengthening
of relations between the research world and the Portuguese enterprises. This
Agency has the capital divided in equal shares by the Ministry of Science,
Technology and Higher Education and by the Ministry of Economy and Innovation.

The primary action activities of this Official Organ of MADRP are research, development and community services. LNIV is a
National Reference Laboratory for the diagnostic of animal diseases and
for waste research in living animals and in animal by-products, as milk and
its derivatives. This institution is also an International Reference
Laboratory for laboratorial diagnostic of contagious bovine
peripneumonia.
