The use of Plant Protection Products (PPP) and Fertilisers and Soil Conditioners (F&SC) in organic agriculture is regulated by the Council Regulation EEC 2092/91, Annex II. This regulation is of crucial importance to consumer perception of organic products and for the farmers' yield, income and competitiveness. However, the implementation of Annex II varies between European countries and different organic labels because there are no harmonised procedures for the evaluation and interpretation of the lists. The purpose of this project is to correct this and standardise the procedures.
Objectives
The objective of the project is to develop recommendations for harmonised and standardised procedures for evaluating plant protection products (PPP) and fertilisers and soil conditioners (F&SC), authorised for use in organic agriculture according to EEC 2092/91, Annex II. It also aims to harmonise and improve the quality of organic products and to reduce technical trade barriers in order to give organic farmers in Europe more equal competitive conditions.
The project consists of six work packages with five workshops. Work Package 1 is for coordination and project management. Inventories of the implementation of Annex II and evaluation procedures in the participating countries representing Northern, Western, Southern and Central Europe will be carried out in Work Package 2 for PPP, and Work Package 3 for F&SC. Standardised procedures for the evaluation of PPP and F&SC will be elaborated in Work Packages 4 and 5. Recommendations on evaluation procedures for PPP and F&SC, plus research needs and dissemination, will be discussed with stakeholders and end users in Work Package 6. Progress to Date
The project website contains all progress reports and project reports. The working group ion plant protection products held a two-day workshop, and obtained an overview on product usage. Four thematic working groups were formed, to provude scientific input to future workshops.
