EUFRAM
Concerted action to develop a European framework for probabilistic risk assessment of the environmental impacts of pesticides

The EUFRAM project aims to assist the implementation in Europe of probabilistic methods for assessing the environmental risks of pesticides. EUFRAM will run for four years starting January 2003 and involves 29 partners from government, industry and academia in Europe and North America.

Objectives
The objectives of the project are to:
1) manage the project and integrate the results into a single harmonised framework for the use of probabilistic methods for assessing environmental risks of pesticides
2) create a network to co-ordinate RTD tasks and implement harmonised standards for the use of probabilistic methods for assessing environmental risks of pesticides
3) develop a harmonised framework of proposed standards and procedures encompassing the following:
a) when to use probabilistic methods
b) which methods of uncertainty analysis to use
c) which methods are appropriate for routine assessments
d) how to report assessments
e) how to communicate the results
4) select and enrich case studies to act as benchmark examples
5)develop common research instruments to validate assessments
6) establish a common methodology for selecting software and databases
7) find ways to pool data currently in private hands
8) undertake testing of the framework and case studies by end users
9) disseminate results and inform end-users and other stakeholders.

Progress to Date
The project website has been established, with public pages describing the project, and private pages containing management information and tools, including a database to monitor and archive project deliverables.
Preliminary papers have been produced for the objectives, analysing the issues to be addressed and proposing detailed plans for the next phase of work.
