EUCABLIGHT
Potato late blight network for Europe

Late blight (P.infestans), the most serious potato disease, costs more than l0,000
million Euro/year in crop losses and control costs worldwide. Over 30 fungicide
applications/year are made in some countries whilst host resistance is deployed
in others.

Objectives
To establish a network of European scientists working on late blight resistance and the characterisation of Phytophthora infestans populations. The main aims of the project include the standardisation of methods for assessing host resistance to late blight and the characterisation of P.infestans populations. Members will be trained to implement these methods. We aim to collate the available data into a harmonised and readily accessible database so as to allow breeders and geneticists to compare or exploit sources of resistance in their breeding programmes. Databases will be created of European P.infestans isolates (to assess population structure and diversity at a continental level) and potato germplasm characterised for foliage and tuber blight resistance. The databases will be publicly available.

Progress to Date
A Eucablight website is fully functioning and can be consulted for any information relating to the project.Meetings of the technical and management committees and the regional groups have taken place. Future meetings are currently being plannedDatabase descriptors for both the host and pathogen have been decided and database construction is ongoing. A questionnaire has been sent to members in order to collate and compare standard methods for the characterisation of host and pathogen.
