The project addresses fire prevention and control in the Mediterranean region and the focus will be on long-term fire prevention. Fire prevention, pre-suppression and suppression all require information on fuel characteristics (e.g. composition, structure, spatial distribution), infrastructure and terrain (topography). This information is required in a timely and accurate manner, and in a format that is easy to handle and use for integrating into strategic plans for fire suppression management. The information will be designed for the district and sector forest unit level, but be capable of being integrated to higher levels, as necessary. The aim of this proposal will be to create an Internet application to assist forest managers in long-term fire prevention management.
To develop remote sensing and GIS tools and methodologies for providing more reliable, accurate and up-to-date information for identifying, quantifying and evaluating fire hazards and risk than is currently provided by traditionaland remote sensing methods.
To develop a prototype GIS-based system for providing information on fuel, infrastructure, land use and terrain in the Mediterranean region at district and sector forest management units levels, using Internet technology.
To generate user-defined information products from very high spatial resolution satellite remote sensing data on fuel properties, terrain, land use and infrastructure for more effective fire prevention and control planning and management than is currently available.
To demonstrate the ability of the system to provide comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date information on fuels, infrastructure, land use, and terrain and their spatial and temporal variability for enhanced and more efficient fire prevention and control purposes.
Progress to Date
Several oral and poster presentations on the project's results were given at national and international conferences. Project brochures have been disseminated, and talks given at various international events. Scientific presentations and the project website have been produced for further dissemination. Workshops are planned for the end of the project, as well as an updated website and brochure.
