Genetic diversity of wild crop relatives: Exploitation and efficiency of ex situ conservation of natural resources of wild lactuca species

Genetic resources of wild relatives are becoming increasingly important for crop improvement. Currently, there is an urgent need to optimise the access of the natural occurring genetic diversity to end-users for exploitation, and to improve the efficiency of managing wild crop relatives in ex situ collections. This project will focus on lettuce and research will be directed to the improvement of the accessibility of ex situ collections to end users. Optimal search strategies to identify the genetic diversity relevant for exploitation will be developed, along with the improvement of inter-gene bank coordination, the optimisation of collection composition for the European network of gene banks, and the development of optimal sampling strategies of the natural occurring genetic diversity for ex situ conservation.
