    08/11/2013

Lower Silesia in Poland is a mountainous province which welcomes tourists, an industrial centre specialising in large machinery, energy equipment and household appliances. On its own, Lower Silesia accounts for around 8% of Poland’s Gross Value Added. However, this strong economic situation does not stop it from wanting to diversify through new projects based on innovation.

Flaris is the name of a five-seater family jet-plane developed in Poland through the co-operation of specialists from different European countries. It is made out of extremely light composite materials and is a true revolution in the category of small and lightweight jets. The EU funded Flaris project aims at opening up new market opportunities through innovation, just as the European Union recommends in its Smart Specialisation strategies.

Technological advancement in Flanders' health care system through Smart Specialisation

    08/11/2013

Like many regions of Europe, Flanders in Belgium is seeing an increase in the life expectancy of its inhabitants.

This shift in demographics brings up a series of questions about how the medical system works and what needs transforming. Moving towards 'personalised care and cure' through Smart Systems has become necessary in order to continue offering accessible healthcare to patients.

Bringing together clusters from biotechnology and nanotechnology is what Flanders has opted to do. Nano for Health is one of many good examples of Smart Specialisation in Europe. Like the rest of Italy, the Marche region has been affected by the international financial crisis. The footwear sector, a traditionally handcrafted activity which accounts for over 50% of exports, has been particularly hard-hit.

It was therefore necessary to come up with a Smart Specialisation strategy to modernise equipment and re-stimulate growth and strengthen employment. Innovations such as the automation of the production chain, or developing health and wellbeing products, or offering shoes made to measure thanks to 3D scanners are some of the solutions offered by Smart Specialisation.
