Co-funded by the ERDF, the project is supporting the joint nomination for UNESCO world heritage status in 2012 of a cultural heritage site common to Hungary, Austria and Slovakia, and over 2 000 years old. The joint work of the archaeologists is making it possible to establish common criteria and therefore guarantee similar levels of protection for the sites.

A native of the Danube region, and now a research assistant in ornithology for Birdlife Austria, he is actively contributing to restoration of the river’s banks. In particular, he spent two years studying two species of birds threatened by the construction of a dyke.

For a long time, water pollution prevented him from properly going about his job. Today, with the help of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), his region boasts some of the cleanest waters in Europe.

    Cohesion policy 2000-2006: Tatra Region, Slovakia

    07/01/2007This video showcases the Tatras region in Slovakia, which, in the face of severe problems with water pollution, benefited directly from European funds that allowed it notably to develop a fully operational sewage treatment plant. The ERDF also supported the creation of a modern system for supplying drinking water. From 2000 to 2006, EU cohesion policy provided support for 27 Member States, investing over €120 billion in 230 programmes. Launched in 1986, its effectiveness and support for Europe have been proven time and again, particularly in terms of economic growth, jobs and the environment. On top of this success, several improvements and innovations have been introduced to cohesion policy, starting in 2007, opening up the prospect of going further still by 2013.
