Guidelines on the URBAN Community Initiative 2000-2006

Following consultation with the European Parliament and the committees representing the Member States, the European Commission has adopted the final version of the guidelines for the Community's URBAN II Initiative, devoted to the economic and social regeneration of declining towns and cities and run-down urban districts, on 28 April 2000.

Assistance from the European Regional Development Fund to support the URBAN II initiative in 2000-2006 will total EURO 700 million. The new Initiative has two main objectives:
a) encouraging the design and implementation of highly innovative strategies of economic and social regeneration in small and medium-sized towns/cities and declining areas in major conglomerations;
b) reinforcing and exchanging knowledge and experience on regeneration and sustainable urban development in the European Union.
